The CCA Event is an educational opportunity for everyone to reflect on the written description of what is "ideal" for this breed ~ the essence of a Golden Retriever that is timeless and not subject to changing fashion or popular style.

Unlike many traditional dog sports, Scent Detection (or K9 Nosework) is a world unto itself. This is the training that police narcotic, bomb, and food detector dogs receive. It is not Tracking – the dog is not following a human's trail.

Sport Detection is the fun version of scent detection, such as for narcotics, bed bugs or explosives. The sport, however, uses legal scents that are easily purchased and stored by the average person. All types and ages of dogs and owners are welcome and can have fun & success in this exciting new sport!

Dr. Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, ACVP is presenting a two-day seminar on canine form and function on Saturday, November 9 - Sunday, November 10, 2013. Hosted by the Ottawa Valley Poodle Club.

Dr. Zink is an internationally renowned veterinarian and consultant in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation; Professor in the School of Medicine at John Hopkins University; and award winning author of several books on canine health and performance. Friday/Saturday - Open and Utility: The Open and Utility classes contain all the interesting tasks that are fun for the dog. Yet, many dogs and handlers 'hit a wall' when training and maintaining these exercises. Bridget will teach students how to break down and teach these exercises and then provide the proofing and motivational techniques required to maintain a consistent and confident performance. Sunday- Problem Solving: Bridget will assist working teams with their training problems based on the information from her questionnaire and her observations of the individual teams. The goal is to offer each team several solutions to take with them. Limited to 15 working handlers.

The Ottawa Valley Golden Retriever Club is thrilled to announce that it will be hosting "Transformational Puppy Rearing: Creating Dogs that Enrich People's Lives", an upcoming seminar with Gayle Watkins, Ph.D., Gaylan's Golden Retrievers. The seminar will be held March 2-3, 2013 at the University of Guelph, Kemptville Campus, Kemptville, ON.

The seminar will focus on the why, what and how of the ground-breaking system Gayle has developed to bring out the best in puppies. Day 1 will focus on Puppy Rearing from birth to nine weeks. During this session, she will present the many different things she does to raise pups, week by week, emphasizing Weeks 5 through 9 while not ignoring those important early weeks.

In Day 2, Gayle will present her Puppy Evaluation and Matching program. This portion of the seminar will focus on the temperament test that she has developed and uses to evaluate litters, as well as other opportunities she creates to assess puppies. She will also discuss how to use these assessment results to appropriately match puppies to buyers and guide new owners in the training and development of their puppy.

Building a Dynamic Partnership for Competitive Obedience workshop with Bruce Gibbons on Sunday, January 6th from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Held at the The Dog Ranch in North Gower.

Bruce will share his teaching philosophy and how he motivates his dogs to be such happy workers. Bruce will go through what has been his key to success and how to build a dynamic partnership with your dog. Discussions will also include topics such as how to get the most out of your dog in the obedience ring. Participants will have time to discuss details on how to reduce the number of points they are losing in the ring.

Working Teams will have an opportunity to try out some of Bruce’s methods for a happy working dog. Teams will submit in advance what they would like feedback on and get the opportunity to work with Bruce one on one in the afternoon
