My family got our first Great Dane in 1963. "Rody" was the beginning of my life with Great Danes. He was a black sired by Ch Kalmar Bolshoi's Rowden. We did not show that dog, but eventually got a female and had our first litter of blacks and blues. Over the years, Rody sired a couple more litters and lived to a ripe old age. In 1988, I got my first harlequin bred Dane. She given to me by a friend who was unable to keep her and knew I'd had Danes in the past. Isadora, was sired by CH BMW Patton out of Chauffeured Cheyenne of Hallmark. I still was not showing dogs, but I did do competitive obedience with her. I eventually got her litter sister, Molly, and did obedience with her as well. I started to meet some of the local conformation Dane people while competing in obedience at matches and shows. One day, while waiting for the long sits and downs at an AKC obedience trial, I wandered over to the conformation ring and watched the Danes. I thought that might be fun and began my search for a dog to show in conformation. I eventually got a fawn dog and at his first show, my first time showing a dog, we were awarded first place in a large class of puppies, Winners Dog and Best of Winners and then went on to get Best of Opposite in the breed class. Well don't you know, I was hooked and never looked back after that. Since 1991, I've shown and finished many of my own dogs and occasionally handled for friends and acquaintances. I breed very sparingly, one or two litters every five years or so, only to get dogs to continue building the Dane Affaire bloodline. In 2009, I judged a match for our local Great Dane club and discovered that I enjoy judging dogs as much as I enjoy showing dogs. I wasn't thinking about applying to judge Great Danes seriously at that point, but completed several sweepstakes assignments. Then in 2016, I decided to submit my AKC application to judge Great Danes, completed the requirements, applied and was approved. I've been a member of the Great Dane club of America since 1995. I'm also a member of the Great Dane Club of Northern California and the Monterey Bay Great Dane club. I currently share my home with two brindles, GCh Cayenne and her son, Chile. |
